Courtyard House
Kuwait City , 2005-2012
Courtyard House, located in the neighborhood of Al-Surra in Kuwait, was commissioned to me in 2005. The cultural context of Kuwait, with its emphasis on privacy and isolation for different user groups, presented a unique and challenging programmatic distribution. The house had to cater to the distinct privacy needs of the women's quarters, the men's social entertaining area, and the service staff's living quarters. The courtyard, a central element in the design, played a crucial role in providing comfort to the users. On the one hand, it served as a key organizing feature, effectively separating the various spaces to meet the privacy demands of these different groups. On the other hand, the courtyard significantly contributed to the house’s comfort by optimizing airflow and natural light. In Kuwait's extremely arid climate, this passive cooling strategy was essential for maintaining a comfortable and pleasant interior environment.
