Located in the serene residential neighborhood of Qortuba in Kuwait City, the concept design for two houses proposes ways for a retiree to live together with her adult children while each of them maintains a private, autonomous home. The organization and division into two distinct masses on the site reflect this need for independence, with each home maintaining its own character and function. In the two buildings, finger-like extensions create multiple garden spaces, fostering a strong connection between the indoor and outdoor environments. By maximizing garden space, these building projections break up the building's footprint, creating narrow, elongated areas for greenery that provide visual relief, natural ventilation, and private outdoor spaces for each ground-level room. Large windows and doors dissolve the boundary between inside and outside, allowing residents to immerse themselves in the landscape. These gardens, shaded by the building masses above, offer a tranquil retreat on sunny days.
The villas' facades feature a series of rectangular volumes and clean lines, predominantly composed of light-colored materials such as concrete or stucco to reflect the sun. The facade is divided into multiple segments, each with its distinct volume, creating a dynamic and articulated appearance that breaks down the building's mass and enhances its visual appeal. Large, horizontally oriented windows of varying sizes and placements add visual interest and allow natural light to penetrate the interior spaces. Deeply recessed windows on the upper levels provide shade and reduce glare from the strong sunlight. Sparse landscaping with low-growing plants and a few taller sculptural plants further enhances the building’s external design without overwhelming the facade, seamlessly integrating the buildings into their environment.
