Stairway to Heaven (25 mins) is a portrait of the people building Cairo's new mosques on the city's expanding edges, where religious construction is going up faster than the state can regulate. Through interviews with the architects, mini-developers, brickmakers, light designers, and Azhar sheikhs who shape them, the film moves through construction sites, taxi interiors, and workshops, immersing the viewer in the soundscape of the ring road and the microenvironments surrounding these mosques. Shut out of formal economies and state planning, its subjects build through unofficial channels and improvised craft, turning religious space into a means of survival and a form of collective care. The film also forms part of the larger exhibition The Loudspeaker and the Tower, where it sets the context for the wider project.
