Mummy Issues I: I Am Not Your Mummy SOMA, Mexico City, 2019

The Super 8 performative film Mummy Issues I: I Am Not Your Mummy features me wrapping and unwrapping myself in packing tape, a material widely used in Mexico City to “fix things.” I performed this in Mexico City and Veracruz during the summers of 2019 and 2021. The packing tape symbolizes the instability of home and transient living, while the act of wrapping and unwrapping explores vulnerability, healing, and the pain of undoing traditional roles. The knife used to cut the tape dangerously close to my face underscores the risks involved in revealing oneself, metaphorically rejecting the “mummy” role as both caretaker and mummified body.

The performances took place at culturally significant sites in Mexico City, such as the Monumento a la Madre, engaging with themes of motherhood and cultural identity. At the Fuente de los Cántaros, featuring indigenous model Luz Jiménez, I critiqued the portrayal of Indigenous women in Mexican history. The performance at Monumento a la Raza, a site dedicated to Indigenous peoples, and at archaeological sites outside the city, connected my work to the preservation of artifacts and the reclamation of cultural identity. These performances gesture towards reclaiming the heritage of Egyptian mummies from colonial framings and rejecting caretaking roles imposed on mothers by societal expectations.
