Roll, Jordan, Roll (notes on the printed edition) Cairo, 2026
The English and Arabic editions of Roll, Jordan, Roll, printed as a companion to Blue-Black Liver (2025), present an early version of the essay. A revised and expanded version, with new research and full notes, appears in English in The Avery Review, October 2026.

Corrections to the printed edition:

The Jordan in the spirituals. The printed edition presents the river as a symbol of passage from bondage to liberation. In many spirituals the Jordan marks death and the crossing into heaven. Its reading as liberation in this life is one reading among several, and in part a later one.

Pilgrims on the banks of the Jordan, 1913. The stereograph is dated April 15, 1913. Nothing identifies the pilgrims as on their way to an Epiphany baptism, here or in the later reference to “the Epiphany baptism site.” “Jordanian mud” should read “the mud of the Jordan’s banks”; there was no Jordanian state in 1913. Underwood & Underwood bought and licensed Holy Land negatives from local studios, including the American Colony, but the source of this particular negative is not established.

Allenby’s entry, 1917. Allenby’s entry into Jerusalem in December 1917 marked the beginning of British military rule, not “the birth of the British Mandate.” The Mandate began in 1920, and the League of Nations confirmed it in 1922.

The Matson Photo Service. The American Colony disbanded in 1934. G. Eric Matson then took over the Photo Department and renamed it the Matson Photo Service in 1940.

Men working in the river, ca. 1925–1946. The Library of Congress catalog identifies neither the man on the bank nor the workers. The printed text’s description of him as a European supervisor, here and later as “a white-suited supervisor,” goes beyond what the record supports.

What the archive shows. The printed text says the American Colony and Matson photographs contain no depictions of everyday life along the river. Such images are rare in this archive, not absent, and the studio did photograph Palestinian daily life, usually as picturesque or ethnographic type.

Crossing Jordan’s Waters, 1967. The original caption identifies the woman only as a refugee from the Hebron area. It does not describe her as elderly.

Musa Sanad and his students, 1971. The photograph was taken at the springs of ʿEin al-Fashkha on the northwestern shore of the Dead Sea, in the Jericho area, not at ʿEin al-Sultan spring in Jericho. The springs are not part of the Jordan River. The photograph belongs in the essay for two reasons. The springs flow into the same terminal sea as the Jordan, whose level has fallen as upstream diversions reduced the river’s flow. And the photograph records what the institutional archive rarely did: Palestinians in the valley’s waters for their own pleasure, at a site Israel had begun to enclose two years earlier.

Notes. Several notes in the printed edition contain incomplete or imprecise citations. The notes in the revised version replace them.

The Avery Review.
